Wooden Nickel

Wooden Nickel Records was founded in 1969 in Chicago, Illinois, by music producer and entrepreneur, Bill Traut. Initially focused on rock and pop music, the label gained prominence in the 1970s with its roster of artists, including the influential band The Ides of March, known for their hit "Vehicle." The label also represented other notable acts like the rock band The Shadows of Knight and the folk-rock group The Flock. During its peak, Wooden Nickel was recognized for its contributions to the burgeoning Chicago music scene, embracing genres such as rock, pop, and folk. Despite its initial success, the label struggled to maintain its momentum in the late 1970s and eventually ceased operations in the early 1980s. Wooden Nickel's legacy lies in its role in fostering regional talent and its impact on the Chicago music landscape, leaving a lasting imprint on the history of independent record labels.
