Arhoolie

Arhoolie Records was founded in 1960 by Chris Strachwitz in El Cerrito, California. The label emerged as a significant force in the preservation and promotion of American roots music, particularly folk, blues, and Cajun genres. Strachwitz, a German immigrant, was passionate about documenting traditional music, leading to the release of influential recordings that showcased artists such as Mississippi Fred McDowell, Lightnin' Hopkins, and the Cajun band Balfa Brothers. In the 1970s, Arhoolie expanded its catalog to include a wider variety of world music, notably Mexican and Caribbean sounds. The label became known for its high-quality recordings and commitment to authenticity, earning a reputation as a vital resource for music scholars and enthusiasts. Arhoolie's legacy endures through its extensive catalog and its role in the folk revival movement, influencing countless musicians and preserving the cultural heritage of American music. In 2016, the label was acquired by Smithsonian Folkways, ensuring its continued impact on the music community.
