Biograph Various ArtistsMary Pickford (1892–1979) was a Canadian American actress and producer known as a key figure in the silent film era. Often referred to as "America's Sweetheart," she was one of the first major stars of Hollywood, achieving unprecedented success and fame by becoming Hollywood's first millionaire by 1916. Pickford co-founded United Artists in 1919 and was instrumental in establishing studio autonomy. She won an Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in "Coquette" (1929). After struggling with the transition to sound films, she retired from acting in 1933 but remained influential in the industry as a producer and executive, contributing to various important causes throughout her life.
