Robert ShawRobert Gould Shaw (1837–1863) was a Union Army officer during the American Civil War, best known for commanding the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, the first all-black regiment in the Northeast. Born into a prominent abolitionist family, he advocated for the equal treatment of African American soldiers and became a symbol of courage and leadership when he was killed at the Second Battle of Fort Wagner. Shaw's efforts and the valor of his regiment inspired many African Americans to enlist in the Union Army, significantly influencing the war's outcome and later being portrayed in the film "Glory."
