The Kalinago, also known as Island Caribs, are an Indigenous people of the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean, with historical significance during the European colonization era. While initially seen as a warrior culture linked to cannibalism, modern interpretations suggest such narratives were exaggerated or misrepresented. The Kalinago predominantly inhabit Dominica, where they maintain their cultural identity, and they are recognized for their unique language and traditions. The name "Kalinago" was officially adopted in 2015 to replace the term "Carib." Despite historical challenges, including colonial conflicts and demographic decline, the Kalinago continue to exist as a distinct community today.
