FOCUS is a fourth-generation programming language and development environment created by Information Builders Inc., originally designed for data handling and analysis on IBM mainframes. Developed in the 1970s and evolving to support various platforms, including personal computers and the Web with WebFOCUS in 1997, FOCUS enables users to build database queries and automate data management, distinguishing itself through flexibility in data import/export and ad hoc reporting, though it did not achieve the same mainstream adoption as competitors like SAS. Its unique features, such as the Master File Description, allowed for versatile data access without hard-coding file structures.
