Harry T. Moore and Harriette V. S. Moore were civil rights activists assassinated by a bomb on December 25, 1951, in Mims, Florida, marking them as the first martyrs of the Civil Rights Movement. Following their 25th wedding anniversary celebration, the explosion killed Harry instantly, while Harriette succumbed to her injuries nine days later; their deaths prompted widespread outrage and memorials, highlighting the dangers faced by civil rights proponents during this era. Despite investigations implicating Ku Klux Klan members in the attack, no arrests were made, underscoring the systemic violence against activists at the time.
