The Three BarsThe Distinguished Service Order (DSO) is a military decoration awarded by the United Kingdom and formerly the Commonwealth, established on September 6, 1886, by Queen Victoria to honor operational gallantry and exemplary leadership during active combat operations. Initially limited to commissioned officers above the rank of major, the criteria were expanded in 1993 to include all ranks for "highly successful command and leadership." The DSO's design features a silver-gilt cross, and recipients are entitled to use "DSO" as post-nominal letters. The award has seen approximately 16,935 recipients by 2017 and remains a prestigious honor within the British honors system. (Source: Wikipedia)
