Lawrence Welk (1903–1992) was an American bandleader and television impresario best known for hosting The Lawrence Welk Show from 1951 to 1982. Born in North Dakota to German immigrant parents, Welk began his music career in the 1920s and gained national recognition for his "champagne music" style, which was characterized by its light, family-friendly appeal. His television show, which featured a mix of popular music standards and novelty songs, became a staple of American entertainment, particularly among conservative viewers seeking alternatives to the counterculture of the 1960s. Welk's influence persisted even after the show's cancellation, as he continued to oversee reruns on PBS.
