The Palace of Whitehall was the principal residence of English monarchs from 1530 until its destruction by fire in 1698, with only Inigo Jones's Banqueting House surviving. Originating as York Place, it was acquired by Henry VIII and expanded extensively, becoming the largest palace in Europe with over 1,500 rooms before its decline. The area remains significant in British government today. The palace hosted key historical events, including royal weddings and performances of Shakespeare's plays, and its loss marked the end of an era in royal architecture.
