John PhillipsJohn Phillips (1935–2001) was an American musician and songwriter best known as the leader of the folk rock group the Mamas & the Papas. He was a significant figure in the music scene of the 1960s, composing many of the band's hits, including "California Dreamin'" and "Monday, Monday," and played a crucial role in organizing the historic 1967 Monterey Pop Festival. Phillips also had notable solo work, including the song "Kokomo" for the Beach Boys, and struggled with substance abuse throughout his life.
