The Three Friends

The Three Friends of Winter is an East Asian art motif featuring the pine, bamboo, and Chinese flowering plum, which symbolize steadfastness, perseverance, and resilience during winter. Originating in Chinese culture, these plants are esteemed in Confucianism and have influenced the art and traditions of Korea, Japan, and Vietnam, particularly in relation to New Year celebrations. First recorded in a Tang dynasty poem, this theme became prominent in various artistic expressions, notably during the Song dynasty, and continues to hold cultural significance across East Asian societies.
