Developed in the late 1940s by Hermann Bondi, Thomas Gold, and Fred Hoyle, the theory gained traction until the 1960s, when substantial observational evidence, such as the cosmic microwave background radiation and quasar distributions, led to its decline in acceptance among cosmologists. Today, most astrophysicists favor the Big Bang model, which posits a finite age and evolving universe.
