The Steadies

The steady-state theory is a cosmological model proposed as an alternative to the Big Bang theory, asserting that the universe's density of matter remains constant through continuous creation of matter, maintaining a uniform appearance over time. Developed in the late 1940s by Hermann Bondi, Thomas Gold, and Fred Hoyle, the theory gained traction until the 1960s, when substantial observational evidence, such as the cosmic microwave background radiation and quasar distributions, led to its decline in acceptance among cosmologists. Today, most astrophysicists favor the Big Bang model, which posits a finite age and evolving universe.
