Herb Jeffries, born Umberto Alexander Valentino in 1913, was an influential American singer and actor, recognized for his deep baritone voice and as the first black singing cowboy in film. Active from the 1930s to the 1990s, he starred in several groundbreaking "race films," notably "Harlem on the Prairie" and "The Bronze Buckaroo," catering to African-American audiences during a segregated era. Jeffries also gained prominence as a jazz vocalist, performing with notable ensembles including the Duke Ellington Orchestra. He passed away in 2014 at the age of 100, leaving behind a legacy as a pioneering figure in both music and film.
