Barry Martin

Martin Barry (1802-1855) was a British physician notable for his contributions to histology and embryology. Educated at the University of Edinburgh and Heidelberg, he became a fellow of the Royal Society in 1840, earning the Royal Medal in 1839 for his work on embryology. Barry is recognized for discovering the segmentation of yolk in mammalian ova and for his research on the penetration of spermatozoa into the ovum, which laid foundational insights that influenced future studies on fertilization. He also served as President of the Royal Medical Society of Edinburgh in 1836.
