Vanda King

Vanda is an early opera composed by Czech composer Antonín Dvořák, based on the legend of Princess Vanda of Poland. The libretto, adapted from Julian Surzycki's work by Václav Beneš Šumavský and František Zákrejs, was premiered on April 17, 1876, at Prague's Provisional Theatre. Despite its initial success, Vanda struggled to find a lasting place in the repertoire due to its complex orchestration and dramatic shortcomings. The opera emphasizes themes of sacrifice and national pride, ultimately reflecting Dvořák's interest in Slavic themes. Despite limited performances after its premiere, Vanda has seen occasional revivals and is notable for Dvořák's early compositional style.
