Irene CarrollMount Carroll is a city in Carroll County, Illinois, serving as the county seat, with a population of 1,479 as of the 2020 census. Established as a mill town in the early 1840s, it became an incorporated city in 1855 and features a historic district recognized for its significant architecture. The city is notable for its cold climate, having recorded extreme low temperatures, including the coldest state record in Illinois. Home to the former Shimer College campus and the Campbell Center for Historic Preservation Studies, Mount Carroll also hosts the Timber Lake Playhouse, the oldest summer stock theater in the state.
