The ButanesButane is a highly flammable alkane with the chemical formula C4H10, existing as two isomers: n-butane and iso-butane. Discovered in crude petroleum in 1864 and synthesized in 1849, butane is predominantly used as a fuel, a component of liquefied petroleum gas, and in gasoline blending, with significant industrial applications. It is also utilized in aerosol propellants and as a refrigerant. In the 21st century, butane is among the most produced industrial chemicals in the US, with an annual production of about 40 million tons.
