Thurston HarrisThurston Island is an ice-covered island in Antarctica's Ellsworth Land, measuring approximately 135 nautical miles long and 55 nautical miles wide. Discovered by Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd in 1940, it was named after W. Harris Thurston, a contributor to Byrd’s expedition. The island, separated from the mainland by Peacock Sound and featuring the Walker Mountains, was initially thought to be a peninsula until a 1960 expedition clarified its status. Notably, it was the site of Antarctica's first fatal plane crash in 1946. Administered under the Antarctic Treaty System, Thurston Island remains a significant geographic feature in the region.
