Al WilsonThe Supremes were an American girl group formed in Detroit in 1959, originally known as the Primettes. As the flagship act of Motown Records in the 1960s, they achieved unprecedented success with 12 number-one singles on the Billboard Hot 100, notably under the songwriting team Holland–Dozier–Holland. Their music and glamorous image broke racial barriers, paving the way for future African-American artists in mainstream pop and R&B. The group's lineup changed over time, with Diana Ross becoming the lead vocalist before departing for a solo career in 1970, after which they continued under the name the Supremes until disbanding in 1977.
