Continental Various Artists

The Continental Navy was the naval force of the United Colonies and later the United States during the American Revolutionary War, active from 1775 to 1785. Established by the Continental Congress, it faced significant challenges, including a lack of funding and resources, which limited its effectiveness against the powerful British Royal Navy. Despite overseeing several notable engagements and producing skilled naval officers, the Continental Navy did not achieve decisive victories and suffered many losses. Following the conclusion of the war, it was disbanded in 1785, and its legacy contributed to the formation of the United States Navy in 1794.
