He significantly shaped modern gospel music by blending traditional black gospel with elements of soul, pop, and jazz, and was instrumental in the success of numerous gospel choirs and artists, including Aretha Franklin on her acclaimed album "Amazing Grace." Throughout his career, Cleveland garnered four Grammy Awards, became the first gospel artist to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 1984.
