He was born in Mississippi and moved to Chicago in 1946, where he became Muddy Waters' piano player and contributed to many classic blues recordings. Spann's distinctive style and prolific session work established him as a prominent artist in the genre, earning posthumous accolades including induction into the Blues Hall of Fame in 1980 and a memorial field named in his honor.
