George WeinGeorge Wein (1925–2021) was an influential American jazz promoter, pianist, and producer, best known for founding the Newport Jazz Festival, the first outdoor jazz festival in the U.S., and co-founding the Newport Folk Festival. He played a pivotal role in establishing jazz festivals across the country, including the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, and was noted for innovative festival promotion strategies, incorporating corporate sponsorships. Throughout his career, Wein received numerous awards, including the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master designation, and he published an autobiography reflecting on his life in music.
