The Tokens

The Tokens were an American doo-wop vocal group formed in 1955 in Brooklyn, New York, notable for their chart-topping hit "The Lion Sleeps Tonight," which reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1961. They achieved significant success in the 1960s with four top 40 hits and were unique for not primarily covering songs, as they wrote much of their own material. The group, which included original member Neil Sedaka, also worked as record producers for other artists and remained active until the early 2000s, recognized for their contributions to the genre and inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2004.
