Born in Chicago, he gained significant recognition after performing at the 1938 From Spirituals to Swing concert and later collaborated with fellow pianists Albert Ammons and Pete Johnson, helping to popularize boogie-woogie music in the late 1930s and 1940s. Lewis's music career spanned over three decades, and he also appeared in several films before his untimely death in a car accident at age 58.
