Dorothy Ashby

Dorothy Ashby (1932–1986) was an influential American jazz harpist, composer, and singer known for establishing the harp as a viable improvisational instrument in jazz during the 1950s and beyond. Overcoming significant challenges as an African American woman in a male-dominated genre, she recorded numerous albums that blended jazz with R&B and world music, most notably her 1970 album featuring the koto, which showcased her innovative musical style. Ashby collaborated with many renowned musicians and played a critical role in expanding the audience for harp music, ultimately leaving a lasting impact on the genre.
